To log in to JMU Canvas you must have an account with Canvas. If you join the Canvas through your institution, James Madison University, you need to accept a course invitation and you most likely already have a Canvas Account. The required login credentials to access the system are emailed by JMU. The students can also create their own Canvas account by the join code provided by your instructor.
JMU Duo Two Factor Authentication :
JMU IT implements a particular form of MFA/Multi-Factor Authentication called Two Factor Authentication or 2FA. To enable the 2FA JMU used a cloud-based service named Duo in which the users need to use something that they physically possessed like cell phones, tablets, or hardware token to submit an additional verification of identity.
To log in to Canvas as well as many other JMU system, all the students, graduates, faculty, affiliates require this Duo Two Factor Authentication to add an extra layer of protection beyond just username and password. If you already have not enrolled with Duo 2FA sign in to your James Madison University Online Account and set up by selecting your device and phone number, installing the app, and activating. Along with it, you will also be directed to set your JMU e-ID Password.
JMU Canvas Login :
Once you have enrolled for Duo or done it previously as part of establishing your JMU eID, you can log in to your JMU Canvas Online Account in a few simple and easy steps as listed below.
- Go to JMU Canvas Portal at canvas.jmu.edu
- Enter your JMU e-ID as User Name and Password in their respective fields on the left-hand side of the page
- Click on the “Log in” button.
If you successfully log in, you will be land on your personal JMU Canvas Account dashboard where you can see your recent activity and access the global navigation menu like grades, courses, assignments, calendar with Name, Inbox, Settings and Help options. As a student, you will also get the default permission for your Student role in Canvas to access the following features and do a lot of activities.
- Access calendar, discussions and assignments
- Get course announcements
- View course, syllabus, and classes
- Check grades
- Upload and manage personal files
- Join a conversation and send messages to other users
- Create e-portfolios
- Update notification preferences
- See the course grades and a list of users in a course

How to Log In JMU Canvas Online Account without e-ID :
In the case, you are an external user or do not have an activated JMU e-ID, you can use another account to log in to the Canvas. For that, you can
- Go to the JMU Canvas Portal at canvas.jmu.edu
- Click the respective link provided under the Canvas login section to enter a new login page
- Provide your login email address and password in their fields
- Click the “Login” button

To Reset Password :
If you log in for the first time or you are an existing user but do not remember your password, you can request to set a new password with the self-serving option provided on the login page.
To initiate the procedure, you need to click the “Forgot Password?” link located under the entry field and enter the same email address you used at the time of registration. Click on the “Request Password” button to have your password emailed to you in that address. An email with a randomly generated password will be sent to you. Log in to Canvas with it and then replace the password with a new one.
